What is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is coaching for your life! Just like a sports coach teaches you how to play the game, identifies your weaknesses and helps you overcome them, a life coach works with you to establish big goals, identifies your stumbling blocks, and helps you conquer them. Life Coaching is all about planning your future, achieving your goals, and growing as a person.
Is Life Coaching the same as Counseling?
Life Coaching and Counseling have a lot of similarities, but they are not the same thing. There a two major differences. First, in order to be a counselor you have to have a license, but life coaching does not require any education or license at this time (although I would encourage you to look for a life coach with some training or education). The other main difference between the two professions is their goals. Counseling focuses on understanding an unchangeable past, and Life Coaching focuses on designing a newly-defined future.
Can Your Life Coach be your Counselor and vice versa?
Only a licensed counselor should be your actual counselor. If you're seeing a Life Coach, they should not make any attempts to address mental health diagnoses, abuse, or trauma. You can bring these up during your sessions, but if your Life Coach is not trained (and licensed) to handle these issues, they should be directing you to an licensed therapist.
It is not suggested that you see a counselor for both counseling and coaching sessions. This can cause confusion for you and your counselor and may not yield the best results. Some experts suggest having a separate counselor and life coach; they will work separately with you and the work you do with one will benefit the work you do with the other.
Is Life Coaching a good fit for me?
Life Coaching is a good fit for anyone who wants to make a change in their life but feels stuck. Your Life Coach will provide you with a different perspective and help you set goals to achieve the future you want.
What do people get a Life Coach for?
The list is endless, but here are some popular reasons why people hire a life coach...
~they want to get control of their schedule
~they want to grow their career
~they want to start their own business
~they want to go back to school
~they want to learn a new skill
What are your qualifications?
I have my Masters in Pastoral Counseling from Liberty University online. My studies focused on the foundations, theories and techniques of counseling, cultural counseling, marriage and family counseling, women's issues, theology, and basic mental health issues. Many of my classes focused on "the art of referral", which is knowing when to refer someone to a more qualified professional. It is a non-licensure degree, and I am not licensed in my state. I am not a counselor, but I am well-trained to be a life coach.
How much does Life Coaching cost?
On average, Life Coaching costs between $100-$200 for a 1-hour session (the session typically lasts 45-50 minutes and the remainder of the hour is for the coach to take notes about the session). I believe Life Coaching should be available to as many people as possible, so I try to keep my rates as low as I can. I typically charge $25-$30 for the same 1-hour service as other life coaches. You can see my current rates here.
How many sessions of Life Coaching will I need?
This greatly depends on what you're seeing a Life Coach for. I sell my sessions in packages of four, eight and twelve sessions and typically suggest purchasing the small package (with four sessions) until you get familiar with Life Coaching and what it can offer you. I don't try to retain clients who no longer need my services; that does harm to both you (the client) and my practice. After applying and receiving confirmation from me that I can take you on as a client, we can discuss how many sessions we think you may need.
How often will I have a Life Coaching session?
I have a very flexible schedule and try to focus on what works for my clients. Some clients may need to see me every week while others only once every two weeks or even once a month. During your first session, we will discuss what you would like to accomplish and what might be the best timing for your sessions.
How long do sessions last?
Sessions are 45-minutes long. I use the rest of the hour to write down any notes I didn't get a chance to process during the session and I also take some time to consider next steps for you. This is a common counseling and life coaching practice.
How do you conduct Life Coaching sessions?
I have my sessions over Skype or in person. I do not do sessions over the phone as it is very important for both coach and client to be able to see each other to avoid communication errors. I start every session reviewing the goal and the client's "homework" from last session. We discuss how they have been working towards their goal, and I point out anything I notice that might keep them from reaching their goal. At the end of the session, we establish next steps for the client and schedule the next appointment.
Do you coach any age, gender, or religious affiliation?
I cannot legally coach anyone under the age of 18. There are coaches specifically for teens, and if you are a teen or a parent and your teen is interested, I would be happy to help you find one.
I typically coach women because I was specifically trained to handle women's issues in school. Therefore, I feel somewhat unqualified dealing with men's issues. I am also a woman and have an easier time understanding the female perspective. If you are a man looking for a life coach, I would be happy to help you find a more-qualified coach.
I am a born-again Christian and I am a member of a non-denominational church in my area. However, I am trained to conduct sessions with those who are not Christian. You are paying me for a service, and I am strongly against any counselor or coach imposing their religion beliefs on another person during sessions. If you feel that I have made you uncomfortable or have crossed a line during a session, please contact me immediately.
How do I sign up for Life Coaching?
If you're interested in hiring me as your life coach, click here to fill out the application. The application is a basic form asking for your name, email address, age range and life stage, as well as inquiring why you want to hire a life coach. Don't stress about the application; it is more of a formality and it gives me the opportunity to say no if I don't have room for more clients. I try to respond to every application within three business days, but if you haven't heard from me yet, please contact me at email@example.com.
What happens if my application is accepted?
If your application is accepted you will receive an email explaining next steps. I will ask you to review and sign the Client-Coach Agreement (this is an online contract). I will also include current package rates and will ask you which package you wish to purchase.
What happens if my application is rejected?
If your application is rejected you will receive an email explaining why it was rejected. Typically applications are rejected because I have too many clients, but I may also cite a conflict of interest on my part, or a lack of qualification. In other words, if you receive a rejection, it's because I am lacking, not you :)
Do my Life Coaching sessions expire?
Yes. All life coaching sessions expire six months after purchase. That way, I can ensure that new clients are not losing time with me.
How do I purchase Life Coaching sessions?
When your application is accepted, I will email you with a list of current packages and prices. Once you respond and your Client-Coach Agreement has been signed, I will send you an invoice through Paypal. If your invoice has the wrong package or pricing information on it, please to not pay it; email me at and I will send the correct invoice to you. I do not start scheduling sessions until the invoice is paid.
Can I purchase Life Coaching sessions for a friend?
Yes! If you're interested, contact me at and I can address your specific situation. Unlike typical sessions, I do allow refunds for gifted sessions within one month if the prospective client has not signed the Client-Coach Agreement.
How is my information stored?
All purchasing information is collected through Paypal and stored there. Please do not include credit card or other personal information in emails to me or to others. I will never ask you to email your credit card information to me.
I take physical notes during our sessions and store them in my home. If I need to destroy any of these notes, they are either shredded or burned (I often write and then rewrite my notes). I may keep physical copies of emails, invoices, etc. in your file as well. You may request any of the information from your file at any time, and I may choose not to give it to you, or may choose to give it to you with conditions(I will explain my reasoning).
From time to time, I may store some of your session notes, email communications, or other information on my computer in the event that I need a digital copy or wish to keep it safer than a physical copy. I have excellent security on my computer to prevent your information being stolen.
It is my utmost desire to keep your information safe. I appreciate you trusting me with your personal information and I do not take that decision lightly. I cannot promise or guarantee the absolute safety of your information, but I can promise to do my best to safeguard it.
